What to Expect

Psychology is still an emerging field across Asia.

I’ve written this guide to tell you a bit more about what to expect from a therapy session with me.

My Theoretical Orientation

I use an eclectic style of counselling, drawing from a variety of theories and techniques, including existential, psycho-dynamic, cognitive behavioural, narrative and Gestalt therapy to tailor each session to the needs of the client.

My Style

I use a directive style of counselling. This means that I may give you direct feedback on unhelpful thoughts or patterns of behaviours I observe. After our initial session, I will devise a treatment plan based on your therapy goals. I will share this with you at the beginning of your first treatment session.

The Session

At the beginning of each session, I will often start by summarising our last meeting and setting an agenda for our time together. This is to ensure we stay on topic and that you get what you want from the session.

Skill Building and Homework

Therapy is often about building and practicing skills. In session, I will work with you to design homework assignments or share readings, so that you can practice building skills between appointments. Homework is optional, but as a general rule the more you do between sessions, the faster the therapy will progress.

Feedback

I work collaboratively with my clients, which means that I will always check in with you about how you’re feeling about our therapeutic relationship, therapy and whether you’re finding our work together helpful. Remember, you are the expert in you!

My Identity

As a white, hetrosexual, cigender woman I've experienced a lot of privilage in my life. However, I try to make my therapy room a safe space by being aware of my own identity and biases.

While I have experience in both trans-cultural counselling and counselling people with marginalised identities, that does not mean I understand everything about everyone – if you ever think I’m not getting it or if I’ve gotten something wrong, please do let me know. The more I know about you and how your identities and experiences intersect, the better I can understand and tailor your therapy.

Appointments

Appointments are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays usually during the afternoons and early evenings, Vietnam or Hong Kong time. There are appointment times available to book directly but if your preferred time is not listed (e.g. evening appointments) then please message and I will do my best to accommodate you.

Appointments can only be booked 24 hours in advance and cancelled 24 hours in advance through the online system.

Online Appointments

Online appointments take place through a secure telehealth platform. This platform does not require any downloads and meets American standards for health care communication confidentiality. I will send detailed instructions of how to log in to your session.
